Latin America and the Caribbean overlap the US working day, so code review, standups and production issues get handled live.

Searched against your stack

Engine, language, target platforms and the part of the game you need covered come from your brief, and each profile is checked against them before you see it.

SKILLS

Top skills to look for in a game developer

A prototype that plays well is the entry ticket. These are the skills that decide whether a game reaches release on time and runs well on the platforms you target.

  • Gameplay that matches the design

Turns a design into mechanics that feel right, and iterates quickly with designers when they do not.

  • Engine depth

Knows the engine you use well, including its object model, memory behavior and where it tends to fail.

  • Performance on target hardware

Profiles on the weakest device you support and keeps frame time and memory inside budget.

  • Tools for the team

Builds editor and pipeline tools so designers and artists can work without waiting on a programmer.

  • Shipping experience

Has taken a project through builds, platform requirements and release, not only prototypes.

  • Networking when needed

For multiplayer games, understands latency, authority and synchronization, and designs for them early.

  • Maintainable game code

Keeps systems decoupled and data-driven, so content can grow without rewriting the code.

  • Working inside production

Estimates honestly, flags risks early and works to milestones alongside art, design and QA.

HIRING GUIDE

How to hire game developers

Game development spans gameplay, tools, graphics and platform work, and projects slip when all of it waits on the same person. This guide covers what a game developer does, how to scope the role, what to test, the red flags and when a dedicated game developer is the wrong hire.

What does a game developer do?

Writes the code that makes a game work: mechanics, systems, user interface, tools and the builds that run on each platform. On larger teams they specialize in gameplay, engine, graphics, networking or tools.

Day to day that means implementing features from design, fixing bugs found in playtests, keeping performance within budget and supporting the art and design teams.

Scope the role before the search

Gameplay programming, graphics, networking and tools are distinct skills. A strong gameplay programmer may have never written a shader or a netcode layer.

Put the engine, the language, the platforms and the specialty in the brief. Say whether the game is a new project or a live game that needs updates.

Which engine should you hire for?

The one you use. Unity, Unreal, Godot and in-house engines each have their own model, and a developer who already knows yours contributes in weeks instead of months.

If you are still choosing, pick the engine for the team you can hire and the platforms you target, not for a single feature.

What to test in a game developer interview

Give a small task close to your real work: a mechanic with a clear spec, built in your engine. Look at how it feels to play, how the code is structured and how easy it would be to tune.

Then ask about a performance or crash problem they solved on a real platform. You want to hear how they found the cause, not only what they changed.

Red flags in game developer candidates

Only prototypes. If nothing they worked on reached players, they may not have dealt with the performance, bugs and platform rules that come at the end.

Optimizing without measuring. Changes made on instinct usually miss the real cost on the target hardware.

Code only they can change. Systems with no data-driven setup force designers to wait on a programmer for every tweak.

Networking bolted on late. For multiplayer, a candidate who treats synchronization as a later task will cost you a rewrite.

No view of production. If milestones, estimates and working with art and design never come up, the schedule will be a surprise.

When should you not hire a dedicated game developer?

When the project is a small interactive feature inside another product. A web or mobile developer may cover it without game specialization.

It is also the wrong hire when nobody on your side can set priorities or review work. A single developer with no producer or technical lead tends to build what is interesting instead of what the game needs.

How much does it cost to hire a game developer?

It depends on seniority, the scope of the work and the country the person works from, and any single number describes one scenario and calls it a price.

What is worth understanding is the shape. On Managed Staffing it is one all-in monthly rate per person, with payments, compliance and replacement cover inside it. On Direct Hire it is a one-time fee of 20% to 30% of first-year base salary and the person goes on your payroll. We quote your number before you interview anyone.

Why hire a game developer in Latin America?

Overlap. Development runs on code review, standups and incidents, and Latin America and the Caribbean share most of the US working day, so those happen in real time instead of overnight.

The second reason is communication. Your developer writes pull request descriptions, technical notes and status updates in English, and we screen English live on a call.

How does CloudTask hire for this role?

You send the engine and language you use, the platforms you target, the specialty you need and the hours you need covered. We source against that brief and come back with 3 to 5 matched profiles within 48 hours, each one screened on a live call and checked against the stack you named.

You interview and choose. On Managed Staffing we handle payments, compliance and onboarding and stay involved with check-ins. On Direct Hire the person joins your payroll from day one. Both carry a replacement guarantee: 24 months on Managed Staffing, 6 months on Direct Hire.

FAQ

The fine print, in plain terms.

Do you hire game developers for Unreal Engine?
The search follows your brief. Name the engine, whether Unity, Unreal, Godot or your own, and each profile you see is checked against it.
What is the difference between a game developer and a Unity developer?
A game developer can work across engines and specialties. A Unity developer specializes in one engine, for games and also for simulations and XR. If your game runs on Unity, ask for that directly.
Can a game developer work on a live game?
Yes. Tell us the engine, the platforms and how you ship updates, and we search for someone with experience supporting a released game.
What is the $299 for?
It starts your search. One time, not a subscription. It applies to your first placement or toward a buyout, so it is not an extra cost, it is the first part of one.
Why is there no number on the monthly rate?
Because it depends on the role, the seniority and the country. We quote the all-in monthly rate per person before you interview, so you know the number before you commit to anyone.
Who is the legal employer?
On Managed Staffing, CloudTask is the contracting party and handles payments and compliance, and you direct the work. On Direct Hire, you employ and manage the hire from day one.
How does tracking work, and can I turn it off?
On Managed Staffing, time and activity tracking is on by default. Talk to us about your setup when you start your search.
What happens if the person does not work out?
Managed Staffing carries a 24-month replacement guarantee, and replacements are not capped. Direct Hire carries a 6-month replacement guarantee: one replacement for the same job description.
Is there a platform or subscription fee?
No. $299 starts your search, one time, and applies toward your first placement. There is no subscription.
