SKILLS

Top capabilities to look for in an account manager

Anyone can run a check-in call. These are the capabilities that decide whether your existing accounts renew, grow or quietly leave.

  • Relationships beyond one contact

Knowing the buyer, the users and the person who signs the renewal, so the account survives when your champion changes jobs.

  • Expansion that fits the customer

Spotting upsell and cross sell opportunities from how the customer actually uses the product, not from a quota calendar.

  • Renewals worked early

Starting the renewal conversation months ahead, with the value already documented, instead of chasing a signature in the last week.

  • Reading account health

Noticing the drop in usage, the unanswered email or the new stakeholder before they turn into a churn notice.

  • Handling the hard conversation

Price increases, service failures and scope disputes, handled directly and in writing, without escalating everything to leadership.

  • Account plans that get used

A short plan per key account with goals, risks and next steps, reviewed with the customer rather than filed away.

  • Clean CRM and forecasting

Renewal dates, expansion pipeline and account notes kept current, so your forecast reflects what is really happening in the book.

  • AI where it saves a step

Call summaries, account research and first drafts of business reviews. Useful for preparation, never a substitute for the relationship.

HIRING GUIDE

How to hire an account manager

Most companies hire for new logos and leave their existing customers to whoever has time. This guide covers what an account manager owns, how the role differs from an account executive and a customer success manager, and when you should not hire one yet.

What does an account manager do?

An account manager owns the commercial relationship with existing customers: renewals, expansion, pricing conversations and the escalations that put revenue at risk.

Day to day that means regular check-ins with key contacts, account planning, working renewals ahead of the date, spotting upsell and cross sell opportunities, and keeping the CRM honest about what each account is likely to do next.

Account executive vs account manager: what is the difference?

An account executive wins new customers. The job is pipeline, demos, negotiation and a signed contract, and it ends at the close.

An account manager starts where the account executive stops. The job is keeping and growing the customer you already have. Different skills, different rhythm, and usually a different compensation plan. Combining both in one person tends to starve whichever part is less urgent that week, which is usually the existing accounts.

Account manager vs customer success manager: which do you need?

A customer success manager focuses on adoption and outcomes: onboarding, training, product usage and making sure the customer gets value. An account manager focuses on the commercial side: renewals, pricing and expansion.

Smaller teams often combine the two. Once your book is large enough that renewals and expansion need their own attention, split them, or hire the account manager first if revenue from existing customers is the bigger gap.

When should you not hire an account manager yet?

When your customers are small, self-serve and rarely talk to anyone. A dedicated account manager needs accounts large enough that a relationship changes the outcome.

It is also the wrong hire when the real problem is the product or the onboarding. An account manager can save a relationship, but not one where the customer never got value in the first place. Fix onboarding first, or hire for customer success.

Is outsourced account management a good idea?

Outsourced account management vendors usually assign a team to your book and bill for the service. It can work for high-volume, low-touch accounts with a clear script.

For key accounts it is harder. The value of an account manager is the relationship and the context they build, and a rotating vendor team resets both. A dedicated person who works inside your tools and your team keeps that context over years, not quarters.

What should I screen for in the interview?

Ask about an account they saved. You want the warning signs they noticed, when they noticed them, and what they did before the customer raised it.

Then give them a scenario: a key account is up for renewal in 90 days, usage is down and your champion just left. Ask for the first three actions and the first email they would send, and read the email.

Red flags in account manager candidates

Saves that start with the complaint. Ask about an account they saved. If the story begins when the customer raised the problem, they react rather than read account health. You want the warning signs they noticed first.

One contact per account. A candidate who talks about their champion and nobody else will lose the account when that person changes jobs. In the renewal scenario, notice whether their first actions reach anyone besides the champion who left.

Renewals in the last week. If their renewal stories are about chasing a signature close to the date, the value was never documented. Strong account managers start the renewal conversation well ahead, with the case already made.

Expansion from the quota calendar. A candidate who describes upsells timed to their own targets, not to how the customer uses the product, will push offers that strain the relationship.

Escalating every hard conversation. Ask how they handled a price increase or a service failure. A candidate whose answer is to hand it to leadership will do the same with your accounts, and the renewal email from the scenario will usually show it.

How much does an account manager cost?

It depends on seniority, the size and complexity of the accounts, the language requirement and the country the person works from, and any single number describes one scenario and calls it a price.

What is worth understanding is the shape. On Managed Staffing it is one all-in monthly rate per person with payments, compliance and replacement cover inside it. On Direct Hire it is a one-time fee and the person goes on your payroll. We quote your number before you interview anyone.

Why hire an account manager in Latin America?

Overlap. Account management happens on calls and in writing with your customers during their working day, and Latin America and the Caribbean share most of the US business day.

The second reason is English, spoken and written, with your most valuable customers. We screen it live on a call rather than inferring it from a profile.

How does CloudTask hire for this role?

You send the book, the account size, the tools and the hours you need covered. We come back with 3 to 5 matched profiles within 48 hours, each one screened on a live call and verified against the stack you named.

You interview and choose. On Managed Staffing we handle payments, compliance and onboarding and stay involved with check-ins. On Direct Hire the person joins your payroll from day one. Both carry a replacement guarantee: 24 months on Managed Staffing, 6 months on Direct Hire.

FAQ

The fine print, in plain terms.

What is the difference between an account executive and an account manager?
An account executive wins new customers and closes the first deal. An account manager keeps and grows existing customers through renewals, expansion and the relationship.
What is a key account manager?
An account manager assigned to your most valuable customers, usually a small number of accounts with more contacts, more revenue at stake and a formal account plan.
Is outsourced account management right for key accounts?
Usually not. Vendor teams suit high-volume, low-touch accounts. Key accounts depend on relationships and context, which a dedicated person keeps and a rotating team loses.
How many accounts can one account manager handle?
It depends on account size and how much each one needs. A few large enterprise accounts can be a full book; many small accounts need a lighter, more scaled approach. We scope it with you before matching.
How fast can an account manager start?
You get 3 to 5 matched profiles within 48 hours. After you choose, plan the first weeks for account handovers, introductions to key contacts and a review of every upcoming renewal.
What is the $299 for?
It starts your search. One time, not a subscription. It applies to your first placement or toward a buyout, so it is not an extra cost, it is the first part of one.
Why is there no number on the monthly rate?
Because it depends on the role, the seniority and the country. We quote the all-in monthly rate per person before you interview, so you know the number before you commit to anyone.
Who is the legal employer?
On Managed Staffing, CloudTask is the contracting party and handles payments and compliance, and you direct the work. On Direct Hire, you employ and manage the hire from day one.
How does tracking work, and can I turn it off?
On Managed Staffing, time and activity tracking is on by default. Talk to us about your setup when you start your search.
What happens if the person does not work out?
Managed Staffing carries a 24-month replacement guarantee, and replacements are not capped. Direct Hire carries a 6-month replacement guarantee: one replacement for the same job description.
Is there a platform or subscription fee?
No. $299 starts your search, one time, and applies toward your first placement. There is no subscription.
