SKILLS

Top capabilities to look for in a demand generation manager

Anyone can launch a campaign. These are the capabilities that decide whether marketing produces pipeline your sales team trusts, or a spreadsheet of leads nobody calls.

  • A sharp ideal customer profile

Knowing who the buyer is, who is not, and writing it down precisely enough that targeting, messaging and lead scoring all follow from it.

  • Messaging that earns attention

Positioning the problem your buyer already feels, in their words, before asking for a meeting. Most campaigns fail at the message, not the channel.

  • Running channels together

Paid social, search, email, content and events planned as one program, so a buyer who sees an ad recognizes the email that follows it.

  • Lead scoring and routing

Deciding what counts as a qualified lead with sales, and making sure every one reaches the right rep fast, with the context attached.

  • A working handoff to sales

Weekly pipeline reviews with the sales team, and the discipline to change the program when reps say the leads are wrong.

  • Reporting on pipeline, not clicks

Measuring meetings, opportunities and revenue by source, and cutting the channels that look busy but do not produce any of them.

  • Owning the marketing stack

Forms, tracking, CRM fields and automation that actually work, because attribution is only as good as the data under it.

  • AI where it saves a step

List enrichment, first drafts of copy and research on accounts. Useful for speed, never a substitute for knowing what the buyer cares about.

HIRING GUIDE

How to hire a demand generation manager

Most companies that search for outsourced demand generation end up choosing between an agency and a freelancer. This guide covers a third option, what the role actually owns, how it differs from lead generation, and when you should not hire one at all.

What is demand generation?

Demand generation is the marketing work that makes the right buyers aware of a problem you solve, and then turns that interest into conversations your sales team can close. It covers positioning, campaigns across channels, content, events and the handoff to sales.

The measure is pipeline. A demand generation program that produces traffic and downloads but no qualified opportunities is not working, however good the dashboards look.

What is the difference between demand generation and lead generation?

Lead generation captures contact details from people who are already looking. Demand generation creates the interest in the first place, and then captures it. In practice a good demand generation manager runs both, but the order matters: without demand, lead capture only collects the few buyers already in market.

Neither of them is cold calling. Outbound prospecting is a sales development role, and if what you need is someone booking meetings by phone, hire an SDR instead.

Should you use an agency or hire a demand generation manager?

An agency is a good choice for a defined project: a launch, a rebrand, a paid campaign you want built and handed back. You get a team of specialists for a fixed period.

A dedicated hire is the better choice when demand generation is a permanent function. The value compounds in knowing your buyers, your sales team and what worked last quarter, and that knowledge stays on your team instead of in an account manager's notes.

When should you not hire a demand generation manager?

When there is nobody to hand the pipeline to. If you do not yet have a salesperson, or a founder with time to take the meetings, the leads will go cold and the hire will look like a failure.

It is also too early when you cannot describe your buyer. Demand generation amplifies a message that already works in sales conversations. It does not find product market fit for you.

What does a demand generation manager own day to day?

The campaign calendar across channels, the budget split between them, landing pages and forms, lead scoring and routing, and the weekly review with sales on what the leads were worth.

Expect them to own the plan and the numbers, and to bring in specialists for design, video or deep paid media work when the program needs it.

What should I screen for in the interview?

Ask them to walk you through one campaign from brief to pipeline: who it targeted, what it said, what it cost in effort, and how many opportunities it produced. Vague answers about impressions are a warning sign.

Then ask about a campaign they stopped. Someone who can explain why they cut a channel understands the job. Someone who only adds channels will spend your budget the same way.

Red flags in demand generation manager candidates

Impressions as the result. A candidate who walks you through a campaign and ends at clicks, downloads or impressions, without the opportunities it produced, has been measured on activity. Ask what the sales team thought the leads were worth.

Only ever adding channels. If they cannot name a campaign or a channel they stopped, and explain why, they will spend your budget by adding more.

A vague buyer. Ask who their last ideal customer profile left out. A candidate who can only describe the buyer in broad terms cannot write targeting, messaging or lead scoring that follow from it.

Sales as the audience, not the partner. A candidate who describes the handoff as sending over a list, with no pipeline review and no story of changing the program after reps said the leads were wrong, will produce a spreadsheet of leads nobody calls.

The stack is someone else's job. If forms, tracking and CRM fields were always handled by another team in their stories, their attribution is only as good as data they never checked.

How much does it cost to hire a demand generation manager?

It depends on seniority, the channels involved, the language requirement and the country the person works from, and any single number describes one scenario and calls it a price.

What is worth understanding is the shape. On Managed Staffing it is one all-in monthly rate per person with payments, compliance and replacement cover inside it, and because this role creates demand it runs on a six-month minimum term. On Direct Hire it is a one-time fee and the person goes on your payroll. We quote your number before you interview anyone.

Why hire a demand generation manager in Latin America?

Overlap. Demand generation sits between marketing and sales, and the handoff happens in real time. Latin America and the Caribbean share most of the US working day, so lead routing problems and campaign fixes are handled the day they appear.

The second reason is English. Your demand generation manager writes the messages your buyers read, and we screen spoken and written English live on a call rather than inferring it from a profile.

How does CloudTask hire for this role?

You send your buyer, your channels, your stack and the hours you need covered. We come back with 3 to 5 matched profiles within 48 hours, each one screened on a live call and verified against the tools you named.

You interview and choose. On Managed Staffing we handle payments, compliance and onboarding and stay involved with check-ins. On Direct Hire the person joins your payroll from day one. Both carry a replacement guarantee: 24 months on Managed Staffing, 6 months on Direct Hire.

FAQ

The fine print, in plain terms.

What is demand gen and how does it work?
It is the marketing work that creates interest among the right buyers and turns it into pipeline for sales. It works through a clear ideal customer profile, a message that lands, campaigns across several channels and a tight handoff to the sales team.
How much should you pay for demand generation?
It depends on seniority, channels, language and country, so a single number would mislead you. On Managed Staffing you pay one all-in monthly rate per person, with a six-month minimum term for this role; on Direct Hire, a one-time fee. We quote your role before you interview.
Is demand generation the same as cold calling?
No. Demand generation is marketing: campaigns, content and targeting that bring buyers to you. Booking meetings by phone is a sales development role, and we place those separately.
Should I outsource demand generation to an agency?
For a defined project, an agency can be the right call. For a permanent function, a dedicated hire keeps the knowledge of your buyers and your sales team inside your company.
How fast can a demand generation manager start?
You get 3 to 5 matched profiles within 48 hours. After you choose, plan the first weeks for access, a review of past campaigns and agreeing the lead definition with sales.
What is the $299 for?
It starts your search. One time, not a subscription. It applies to your first placement or toward a buyout, so it is not an extra cost, it is the first part of one.
Why is there no number on the monthly rate?
Because it depends on the role, the seniority and the country. We quote the all-in monthly rate per person before you interview, so you know the number before you commit to anyone.
Who is the legal employer?
On Managed Staffing, CloudTask is the contracting party and handles payments and compliance, and you direct the work. On Direct Hire, you employ and manage the hire from day one.
How does tracking work, and can I turn it off?
On Managed Staffing, time and activity tracking is on by default. Talk to us about your setup when you start your search.
What happens if the person does not work out?
Managed Staffing carries a 24-month replacement guarantee, and replacements are not capped. Direct Hire carries a 6-month replacement guarantee: one replacement for the same job description.
Is there a platform or subscription fee?
No. $299 starts your search, one time, and applies toward your first placement. There is no subscription.
